Harbourside Report Slams Council

The Otago Chamber of Commerce has released a Report(pdf) on the Harbourside Plan Change, which they commissioned from Paterson Pitts Resource Management Ltd. It documents the threats to businesses and jobs from the Dunedin City Council's planning activity.
It is well worth a read. This seems to be yet another example of Council bungling, and yet again it is property speculators who are benefiting.

  1. The presence of exporting manufacturing and engineering facilities in Dunedin is going to strengthen the city's core base of highly skilled and professional private sector jobs. As this core base expands, the hospitality and service industry (and jobs within them) will grow along side to look after new workers with new income.

However the reverse is not true: the creation of lower paid hospitality and service industry jobs is not going to lead to the expansion of professional and highly skilled jobs in Dunedin's engineering and manufacturing sector.

This whole set up is exactly back to front.
